Jim Davis, president of Dare County Radio Control Flyers, announced that the club recently received a $1,000 “Takeoff And Grow” grant from the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) Foundation.
Only 26 such grants were awarded nationally, and these funds will be used to host a public event for residents of the local community on September 28th, Davis stated.
The event – the Outer Banks Festival of Model Aviation – will afford local residents the opportunity to learn about the hobby of model aviation by actually flying a radio control aircraft under the supervision of one of the club’s instructor pilots.
According to Davis, this will be the fourth consecutive year for this family-friendly event. “Last year we introduced over 40 local residents of all ages to radio control model aviation, and we are planning for even more guests, fun and excitement this year” he added.
In addition to flight operations, other activities will include raffle prizes that will be awarded to non-club members who give flying a try, as well as a lunch consisting of hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and soft drinks.
Admission to this event will be at least one non-perishable food item or comparable tax-deductible cash donation per attendee, all of which will be donated to the Beach Food Pantry.
Further information about this event will be made available in the near future.
Chartered in 1989 by the Academy of Model Aeronautics, Dare County Radio Control Flyers serves to promote radio control model aviation as a sport and recreational activity to local residents.
“The club is a non-profit organization that is always looking for new members to share their passion for radio control model aviation,” stated a news release from the group. “Membership is open to anyone with an interest, including those with little or no experience in the hobby.”
