At the last home softball and baseball games, Cape Hatteras Secondary School salutes its senior players.

These three seniors have played softball for four years of high school.

Grace Vernesoni, who plays third base, also played basketball for three years. She plans to attend University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and study neuroscience and statistics and then go to medical school.

Abby O’Neal, the team’s catcher, has also played basketball for four years and was in the school’s award-winning marching band for two years. She plans to attend North Carolina State University as an education major.

Taylor Mabry has also played basketball for three years and volleyball her senior year. She plans to pursue a career as an attorney. Taylor, a right-handed pitcher, had an earned run average of 1.59 this season. She pitched the last home game for the Lady Hurricanes.

This year’s softball team turned in a 5-7 overall record and a 4-3 Atlantic Six 1A Conference record. In the senior night game against Columbia, Cape Hatteras won the contest 16-6 five innings with pitching by Mabry.

For the baseball team, Mari Dove is the only senior this season. He broke his arm earlier in the season. After graduation, he plans to travel and then attend College of The Albemarle. Dove played on a team with five freshmen, eight sophomores and one junior.

Cape Hatteras baseball team’s 2024 season record was 4-11 overall and 2-7 in the Atlantic Six 1A Conference.
