On the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, right along Milltail Road near the refuge maintenance shop, there are spaces for up to 42 pairs of purple martins (Progne subis) to set up their nests.
These birds are just back from their long migratory journey from Central and South America. Purple martins are gregarious, social and acrobatic as they pluck insects – including mosquitoes – out of the air.
Visitors to the refuge will find plenty of space to pull off the road and watch and listen to these very vocal and entertaining birds, noted USFWS.
