Suspicious person call leads to deputy-involved shooting in Colington

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office has reported a deputy-involved shooting that took place Sunday evening in Colington.

According to a DCSO news release issued Monday afternoon, the Dare County Sheriff’s Office (A District) responded to a call on Sunday, March 17, 2024 at around 7:05 p.m. reporting the presence of a suspicious person in the area of Lake Court and Harbour Road in Colington. The caller stated that there was a female with a knife on their property acting erratically, according to the release.

“The responding deputy arrived on scene at approximately 7:10 p.m. and encountered the female (age 49) walking down Harbour Road. The deputy made repeated attempts to talk to this individual; however, she would not comply with commands. At that point, the deputy deployed their taser and then fired their weapon, striking the female. She was transported to The Outer Banks Hospital for care,” stated the release.

Anjanette Grube with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation confirmed on Tuesday morning that the woman was tased first, then shot.

The deputy involved in the incident has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Information on the condition of the woman and whether any charges will be faced were not available as of Tuesday morning.
