Cape Hatteras Secondary Hurricanes defeated Lakewood High School 5-0 in the first round of the 2023 North Carolina High School Athletic Association Men’s Soccer Championships on Monday, October 30, 2023.
In the second round, the Hurricanes will play Pender County (23-24) on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023. The match will be in Burgaw.
In this first round, for close to 25 minutes, the Lakewood from Roseboro and Cape Hatteras fought for the ball, but kept the keepers busy with shots on goal.
With about 16 minutes to go in the half, striker Liam Van Druten scored the Hurricanes’ first goal, much to the relief of head coach Ian O’Neal.
Eight minutes later, player of the game Derrick Allen scored the second goal for the Hurricanes.
In the second half, Van Druten scored the team’s third goal.
With 10 minutes left in the match-up, Allen scored again.
And, with almost five minutes left in the grueling match, Hurricane Graham Stutts, a middle fielder, took a corner kick and scored for the 5-0 win.
Cape Hatteras Secondary now has a 10-8 overall record for this 2023 season. The team won the Atlantic Five 1A Conference with a 5-1 record. The team is ranked ninth in the 1A bracket.
Pender County, ranked eighth, defeated Ascend Leadership from Sanford 700 to make the second round.
