The Dare County Sheriff’s Office has reported that a person died in an officer-involved shooting that took place late Monday night on Roanoke Island.

According to a DCSO news release, on October 2, 2023, at around 11:30 p.m., the Dare County Sheriff’s Office responded to a trespassing in progress call in the 1300 block of Burnside Road in Manteo.

“When the Deputies arrived an individual came at them with a knife. A Deputy fired their weapon striking the individual who succumbed to their injuries on scene,” stated the DCSO release. “The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) was notified, responded and is handling this incident. The Deputy involved is on administrative leave at this time.”
