Brittany Orosco, a Girl Scout volunteer from Moyock, never had imagined how important Girl Scouting would become in her family’s life. She became involved after registering her oldest daughter, Isabella Orosco, now a senior in college, for Girl Scouts – a mother-daughter journey that began 15 years ago. As very involved girl members of Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast (GSCCC), Brittany Orosco’s two daughters, Isabella and Brianna Orosco, both have earned the highest award a girl may earn in Girl Scouts – the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award.

Brittany and Brianna Orosco recently traveled to the 56^th Girl Scout Convention and National Council Session held in Orlando, Florida as representatives of the area Girl Scout council, GSCCC. Brittany Orosco served as one of GSCCC’s national delegates and was responsible for voting on a number of proposals that would impact Girl Scouting on a national scale, along with thousands of other adult and teen representatives from around the nation.

“Perhaps the most demonstrative proposal voted on during the 56th National Council Session, the delegation voted to pass a DEIRJ language proposal that will insert the word ‘anti-racism’ into the Preamble of the Girl Scouts Constitution, codifying the organization’s guiding principle to be an inclusive, anti-racist organization where all members feel welcome, respected, and empowered,” stated a GSCCC news release. “As amended, it now reads: ‘Girl Scouts advance diversity, pluralism, and anti-racism and actively identify and oppose racism by removing systemic barriers to participation in our Movement and in the communities in which we live.’”

Upon conclusion of the 56^th National Council session, Girl Scout Brianna Orosco was thrilled to experience Phenom, the three-day, girl-focused convention-style event, held at Disney World, which immediately followed the session. Throughout the event, Girl Scouts and adult volunteers were entertained by incredible performances and had the opportunity to take part in unique experiences such as Education Day at Epcot where participants got to hear from many of the women leaders at Disney such as Maryann Smith, vice president of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Brianna Orosco earned her Girl Scout Gold Award just last spring for a completing a service project which brought awareness to the global poaching trade, and was recognized for her accomplishments in a special ceremony for Gold Award Girl Scouts at the convention.

“Girl Scouts continues to strive to develop girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place,” stated the release. “When Girl Scouting is more accessible, the organization has a greater ability to create leadership pathways and opportunities for girls, like earning the Girl Scout Gold Award.”
