One killed, several injured in Friday crash on US 64

A vehicular collision just west of the Alligator River Bridge in Tyrrell County late Friday morning resulted in a death and several injuries.

The collision was called in at 11:22 a.m. on July 14, 2023.

A Honda Odyssey was traveling west on US 64. The vehicle was driven by Henry Dare from Cary.

Coming from the opposite direction was a Ford F350 pulling a trailer with a tractor on it. The truck was driven by William Twiford Jr. from Manteo.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the Odyssey crossed the center line and collided head on with the Ford F350.

The front seat passenger in the Odyssey, who was 17-years-old, was killed.

Other occupants of both vehicles were transported to hospitals by ground units and helicopters, states the State Highway Patrol.

The State Highway Patrol report indicates that speed, alcohol or drugs are not suspected.

All passengers were using seat belts.

The wreck closed US 64 in both directions for 3.5 hours.

Responding to a request for mutual aid, Dare MedFlight and three ambulances went to the scene. Helicopters from EastCare and Nightingale also responded.

Tyrrell County fire department volunteers, Washington-Tyrrell Emergency Medical Services personnel and Tyrrell County Sheriff deputies responded to the scene, as did Creswell Volunteer Fire Department with volunteers and apparatus.

Additionally, two units from the Manns Harbor Volunteer Fire Department and the Dare County Fire Marshal were on scene.
