Tyrrell Prison Work Farm inmate dies after assault, investigation ongoing

The death of an inmate at the Tyrrell Prison Work Farm in Columbia has been reported by the Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Office.
According to information released Wednesday afternoon by the Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Office, that agency and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are “actively investigating the death of an inmate” at the prison.
As the result of an assault that occurred at the prison on Friday, June 9, 2023, Michael F. Crumbley, 58, originally from Bessemer City, NC, was airlifted to ECU Health Greenville and was admitted to ICU in serious condition. Crumbley was pronounced dead on Wednesday, June 14, at 1:33 a.m.
The investigation is ongoing, reports TCSO.
According to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction website, Crumbley was serving a term of nine years to 11 years 10 months for habitual felon and possession with intent to sell schedule I. His projected release date was January 7, 2026.
