New principal named for Moyock Elementary School

Currituck County Schools has announced the selection of Kristen Saunders-Rivera as the new Moyock Elementary School principal for the upcoming 2023-24 school year. Saunders-Rivera replaces current principal Brandi Kelly, who is relocating to the Pinehurst area.
A school-based committee, along with district administrators, assisted with the interview and selection process. Saunders-Rivera joins the Panther family effective June 19, 2023.
Born and raised in Manteo, North Carolina, Mrs. Saunders-Rivera returns to northeastern North Carolina and Currituck County Schools with 26 years of experience in education,” stated a Currituck County Schools press release. “She has served as an elementary, middle, and high school administrator over the last ten years in North Carolina school districts, including six years in an elementary school principalship. As a classroom teacher, Mrs. Saunders-Rivera taught English Language Arts, Multicultural Literature, Social Studies, and Spanish.”
Saunders-Rivera’s educational background includes a bachelor of arts in education from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and a masters in education from Elon University. In 2004, Saunders-Rivera obtained National Board Certification. She earned her administrative licensure from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2013.
“Currituck County Schools welcomes Mrs. Saunders-Rivera to her new position and sincerely thanks Mrs. Kelly for her hard work and dedication during her time with our school district,” stated the release. “Under her principalship, Moyock Elementary School has seen tremendous growth and embarked on new initiatives that will continue to thrive successfully thanks to her leadership and guidance.”
