A fire in the wooded area between Etheridge Road and Steve Basnight Road on Roanoke Island was brought under control Tuesday evening, April 18 before any of the nearby homes were destroyed.

According to Dare County Fire Marshal Steve Kovacs, who was on the scene, the call came in at 5:12 p.m. Crews from the Roanoke Island Fire Department were dispatched to the area. Also on scene were personnel from the North Carolina Forest Service, the Nags Head Fire Department, the Manns Harbor Fire Department, National Park Service, Dare County EMS, Dare County Sheriff’s Office, and Dare County Emergency Management.

The blaze was extinguished in about an hour after burning approximately half an acre of trees and brush in close proximity to several homes. While multiple nearby structures were threatened by the fire, only minimal damage was done to an outbuilding, according to Kovacs.
