Kill Devil Hills Assistant Fire Chief Tommy Lee was presented with the Mayor’s Achievement Award at the March Board of Commissioners meeting for 50 years of exemplary service to the town and the residents.
The award has only been given out three other times in the history of the community – twice in 2008 and once in 2018.
“Once in a while we get a chance to honor a distinguished member of the community or a citizen for their service, their leadership, and their accomplishments,” said Sproul.
“When you see great leadership, you want to recognize it because it motivates others and creates sustaining long-lasting change for the better. Anytime somebody has a lot of accomplishments and a willingness to persevere over a period of time we like to recognize those accomplishments, effort and skill.”
Lee began as a volunteer fire fighter in 1973, and was promoted to captain in 1981. In 1984 he was named Firefighter of the Year. In 1994 he was promoted to Assistant Fire Chief. He was the recipient of the Chief’s Award in 2013 and again in 2018.
In 2019, 2020 and 2021 he was a recipient of Most Calls for Volunteers, answering 108, 120 and 111 calls, respectively.
“We would like to honor you as someone who has served for so many years,” the mayor stated, and presented Lee with a gift and a certificate of appreciation.
