Oceanfront house collapses in Rodanthe

A beachfront house in Rodanthe has collapsed into the Atlantic.
The National Park Service reported Monday afternoon that the bulk of the house debris is at the site, located at 23228 East Point Drive in Rodanthe.
The National Park Service is warning visitors to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore to use caution in recreation activities on the beach and in the ocean near East Point Drive. Debris is spreading south to the Rodanthe Pier and beyond. East Point Drive is just north of the roundabout at the south end of the Rodanthe Bridge.
The collapse occurred around midday on Monday, March 13 2023.
Dare County records indicate the assessed value of the house is $158,000, the land $13,100 and a miscellaneous structure $1,400 for a total of $173,400.
The house, built in 1976, has three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths in 1,116 square feet. The lot has or had 5,500 square feet.
Dare County records indicate that J. Barry Holmes and Cheryl A. Holmes of Slatington, Pa., have owned the property since 2007. According to online obituaries, Mr. Holmes died Feb. 3, 2023.
