The Elizabethan Gardens has announced that Laura Hensley will join the organization as programs manager. Hensley previously served as curator of education of the North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke Island. She will develop and lead the Gardens educational programming for adults, students and pre-k early learners.

“With grant support from the Outer Banks Community Foundation and Cannon Foundation, the Gardens is moving forward on projects that will allow us to broaden our current educational programming,” said Gardens executive director Theresa Armendarez. “Laura’s commitment to the community, perspective and experience will help the Gardens build an education program that is aligned with the needs of the local school community and visitors.”

Hensley has various experience in education including formal classroom teaching, informal education in after-school programs, summer camps and developing programs. She moved back to her home state of North Carolina last year after working in Mississippi developing programs for the Mississippi Aquarium. She lived in Alaska for 11 years working in outdoor recreation and education while getting her master’s degree in biology. Her passion is environmental education and connecting people to the natural world through hands-on learning experiences.

“I am excited to be a part of this new endeavor at the Elizabethan Gardens and hope to continue connecting youth and the community to nature in this beautiful space,” said Hensley.
