On Saturday morning, Dec. 17, 2022, a Dare County Sheriff’s Office deputy tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on the Washington Baum Bridge.
The driver, Keion Anthony Blackford, 26, of Grandy, jumped out of his vehicle and started running.
He was picked up by another motorist who pulled into the CVS driveway in Manteo. Blackford left the car and ran into the woods adjacent to the CVS. He was apprehended after a short foot race, reports Chief Dare County Deputy Jeff Deringer.
Cooperating agencies were officers from the Dare County Sheriff’s Office and Manteo Police and Nags Head Police departments.
Blackford was charged with resist, delay and obstruct a public officer. He had an outstanding warrant for driving while license revoked.
The DCSO canine alerted to the vehicle that picked up Blackford. That driver was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Derringer reported that this driver didn’t know what Blackford was doing when he picked him up.
The first call to Dare County dispatch came at 10:59 a.m. Blackford was arrested at 11:30 a.m. Bail was set at $4,000, which Blackford has posted. He is due in court Jan. 13, 2023.
