On Thanksgiving Day, the 11th annual Surfin’ Turkey 5K is slated for the streets of Hatteras village.

The Surfin’ Turkey 5K is one of the main fundraising events hosted by the Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund. It supports the educational needs of students on Hatteras Island.

This fall, the fund distributed $22,568.33 to local teachers for projects at the Cape Hatteras Elementary and Cape Hatteras Secondary Schools.

During its fall grant cycle, the organization funded 10 different projects, including several out-of-state field trips, a veterans’ appreciation event, student-led supplies for the Science Olympiad competition and classroom resources to expand student growth in reading and writing.

Also included in this grant cycle was funding for technology updates to the secondary school’s theater to support a new school drama program under a new director Blake Taft.

Registration is available at the Wednesday packet pick-up at the race headquarters, the Hatteras Village Civic Center, from 4 to 6 p.m. or the day of the run beginning at 7 o’clock. The fee for the charity event is $45 per runner.

For the Puppy Drum Fun Run, the suggested donation is two cans food for the Cape Hatteras Food Pantry. Children 10 and under are free for run or walk and post-race pancake breakfast.

Costumes are encouraged and folks can walk, jog or run at their leisure through the scenic and easy-going course that winds through the heart of historic Hatteras village.

The Surfin’ Turkey 5K begins at 8 a.m. while the Puppy Drum Fun Run launches at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving morning. Go to hatterasyouth.com/surfin-turkey-5k for more information.
