Dare commissioners hear report from tax collector

The Dare County Board of Commissioners tasked tax collector Becky Huff on Sept. 6, 2022 with collecting 2022 real estate and personal property taxes.
Taxes are based on the budgeted valuation of $16,312,781,089.
For 2022, the real estate and personal property taxes for Dare County and the towns of Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Manteo, Southern Shores and Duck total $100,683,146.10.
Huff reported on the tax collection efforts for the 2021 levy.
For Dare County, as of June 30, 2022, collected taxes totaled $65,722,073.01 for a collection rate of 99.63% on real estate and personal property taxes.
In the incorporated towns, the tax collection rates for real estate and personal property taxes as of June 30, 2022, were Kill Devil Hills at 99.73%, Kitty Hawk 99.40%, Manteo at 99.66%, Southern Shores at 99.85%, and Duck at 99.99%.
For beach towns, special tax districts for beach nourishment have been created. Collection rates for beach nourishment taxes are Kill Devil Hills at 100%, Kitty Hawk at 99.93%, Southern Shores, 99.95% and Duck at 99.98%.
For the Roanoke Island Water Assessment, the collection rate was 97.75%. The balance remaining is $109,757.73 out of a total levy of $4,875,860.
Mesia Wescott Godfrey was sworn in as Dare County deputy tax collector on Sept. 6. Her parents Nevin Wescott and Lynanne Wescott attended the ceremony at the Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting.
