Five First Flight Middle School students participated in the North Carolina Renewable Energy Challenge hosted by the Coastal Studies Institute (CSI) on Saturday, April 30. The students met after school to prepare for the competition.
The wind energy team of Caba Finch and Sarah Wisden designed and built a wind turbine that generated electricity, while the wave energy team of Axil Sailor, Sarah Wisden, Eli Lawrenson and Dan Brown created an energy converter that used waves to create electricity.
They presented their research and process to a panel of judges. The ocean waves team was awarded a prize for a successfully designed energy converter.
The teams participated in other challenges as well, such as creating a windmill to lift weight, making sail cars and using tinker toys to make wave energy converters.
