The Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department (SSVFD) responded to a structure fire at 8 5th Avenue in Southern Shores Saturday evening, April 23. The call came in about 8:30 p.m. and SSVFD was assisted by fire departments in Duck, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Colington and Nags Head.
According to Southern Shores town manager Cliff Ogburn, everyone was out of the house and accounted for when firefighters arrived, though the number of people who were evacuated is unknown at this time. There was very minor damage to an adjacent house. No injuries were reported.
Firefighters were paged at 8:28 p.m. and arrived on the scene less than four minutes later. The bulk of the fire was put out within an hour, but crews worked until past midnight.
“First and foremost, we are thankful that everyone got out of the house safely and that there were no injuries,” stated Ogburn in an email. “The Town is very appreciative of the hard work of the SSVFD and all the responding agencies in containing the fire to one structure, including the FF Departments listed above, Dare County EMS and our PD.”
The home was rented through an agency, and Ogburn said he assumes that the guests were relocated to another rental. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
