Spanish and king mackerel commercial fisheries open

North Carolina Marine Fisheries Proclamation FF-17-2022 opened the commercial Spanish mackerel harvest in North Carolina Coastal Waters, effective at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2022.
It is unlawful to sell or offer for sale king mackerel taken with gill nets in the Atlantic Ocean south of Cape Lookout, except for vessels with both a valid Federal Commercial Directed Shark Permit and a valid Federal King Mackerel Permit, when engaged in directed shark fishing with gill nets south of Cape Lookout, to possess and sell more than three king mackerel per crew member.
“The intent of this proclamation is to allow harvest of Spanish and king mackerel in compliance with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission Spanish Mackerel Fishery Management Plan,” states the proclamation.
