Hurricanes and Wildcats split basketball wins

On the Buxton basketball court, Cape Hatteras and Columbia split varsity victories Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022.

Cape Hatteras varsity boys defeated Columbia 68-43.

Columbia varsity girls beat Cape Hatteras 51-38, according to the score posted on MaxPreps by Cape Hatteras.

Cape Hatteras boys led the entire game, going ahead 15-5 in the first quarter. The Hurricanes continued to produce more points in each quarter than did Columbia.

Five Cape Hatteras players made 6 three-pointers. Three Columbia players scored threes.

Three Cape Hatteras players scored in double digits. Sophomore Jerry “Trip” Stephens scored a game high 23, all of which were field goals. Also in the double digits were a pair of seniors: Ayden Paddock with 14 and Osmar Padilla with 11.

For Columbia, Andrew Etheridge scored 10 points and Jahcier Sykes nine points.

Fouls were almost even, with Cape Hatteras chalking up 14 and Columbia 12. No player fouled out.

Columbia’s girls, led by senior Vaniah Melton, took off with a 15-8 first quarter lead.

But Cape Hatteras gained a couple of points in the second quarter to a half-time score of Columbia 23 and Cape Hatteras 18.

Cape Hatteras slipped closer in third quarter, posting 10 points to Columbia’s five. Cape Hatteras tied the game at 28.

But Columbia roared back. In the fourth quarter, Melton scored four three-pointers. Freshman Shetana Spencer added another three.

Melton was the game’s leading scorer with 20 points. Keagija Edmontson scored 11 and Spencer 10.

For Cape Hatteras, senior Emma DelMonte scored 18 points and Chloe Flythe, a dozen.

Cape Hatteras was called for 14 fouls; Columbia chalked up nine. Again, no player fouled out.

In conference play, Columbia varsity girls stand 2-1 and Cape Hatteras girls at 1-3. Columbia varsity boys post a conference record of 2-1 and Cape Hatteras 3-1.
