A North Carolina police officer was shot in the leg and wounded on Monday while responding to a domestic dispute, authorities said.
According to a news release from the Greensboro Police Department, officers responded to a call at around 1:55 p.m. from a restaurant on the city’s west side regarding a domestic dispute call.
When the officers arrived, they encountered one of the people involved in the dispute, who police identified as Kendicia Melanie Clarke, 22. Police said as officers attempted to detain Clarke, a struggle ensued in which Clarke tried to take one of the officers’ weapon. The weapon went off, striking eight-year veteran Officer H.L. Jefferson in the leg, the news release said.
Jefferson was taken to a local hospital with injuries not thought to be life threatening. Clarke had minor injuries and was treated on scene, police said.
Clarke was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer. Additional charges are pending, according to the news release.
