The Town of Manteo wrapped up a full season of summer activities and is in full swing preparing for holiday festivities.

The Saturday farmer’s market saw great success, with over 40 vendors throughout the season. “It was so busy in town, the vendors had a great season,” said program manager Michele Bunce. “We had more farmers and produce vendors toward the end of the season,” she added.

An exceptionally hot day deterred some families from attending the Kid’s Fishing Tournament, but “there were a lot of local people who came out” and various awards were presented, according to Bunce.

The town participated in National Night Out in August, which increased awareness and community partnerships with the police department. Though it rained that day, it was still well attended.

The Maritime Museum is holding its 9^th Annual Wooden Boat Show Saturday, October 30 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Creef Park. The event usually draws over 20 boats of all different styles, from canoes to 45’ sailboats and welcomes homemade boats, as well as personally or professionally restored boats. “You never know who or what is going to show up,” museum director Barry Wickre said. Admission is free and those interested in registering a boat for the event can call Wickre at 252-475-1750 or register online at the town’s website.

Bunce is already planning for holiday events. Though some plans are still pending and are subject to the governor’s requirements, Bunce did confirm that the Christmas tree lighting and parade are scheduled for Saturday, December 3. The Roanoke Island Garden Club will again hold its wreath contest, which invites local business owners to compete for the most beautifully and creatively decorated wreath. Winners receive ribbons and wreaths are hung in prominent locations through town, including Town Hall, Cartwright Park and the recently-completed Town Common.

Third-party events will also be happening this season in Manteo. Though the town doesn’t publicize those directly, there are plans in the works for a Halloween event with booths and crafts, and pumpkin festivities will be held at Island Farm this month.

There are more ways to discover events with the town’s new website http://discovermanteo.com. It features community events and attractions, and information for visitors like lodging, dining and shopping options. “We’re also working on creating videos, an Instagram page and a Pinterest page,” Bunce said. There is a newsletter that will be posted on the new website twice a month with updates and links to town happenings.
