At 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 21, 2021 at Midway intersection, a Dare County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Brennan Wescott was driving north with flashing lights and siren from Wanchese to answer a domestic violence call elsewhere on Roanoke Island.
The deputy was three-fourths of the way across the intersection when Tony Armstrong Ronell Jr., driving a tractor-trailer pulling an empty lowboy failed to yield to the emergency vehicle, according to State Highway Patrol Trooper W.A. Weldon.
After hitting the deputy’s vehicle, the tractor-trailer veered left into a camper trailer stopped at the eastbound side of the intersection’s traffic light. The camper was driven by Scott Norton from Zebulon.
At 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Weldon said Wescott had been transported to The Outer Banks Hospital after the collision and was shortly to be transferred to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
As of Oct. 22, Wescott was doing well. After tests and observations, he was released from the Norfolk hospital, reports Major Jeff Deringer with the Dare County Sheriff’s Office. The deputy has been with DCSO since August 2018
No other injuries were reported.
Ronell was charged with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
Midway intersection on Roanoke Island is at the eastern end of the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge. NC 345 from Wanchese is on the southern side of the intersection and on the other side, U.S. 64-264 heads north toward Manteo.
