Manteo town manager announces departure

Town manager James Ayers announced Tuesday, October 19 that he will be departing from the Town of Manteo. Ayers provided a 60-day notice of his departure to  the Board of Commissioners in accordance with his employment agreement, stated a press release from the Town of Manteo.

“I am grateful to the Board of Commissioners and the people of Manteo for the opportunity to serve the local community,” said Ayers. “It has been an honor to work alongside the many dedicated Town staff members, community volunteers, and elected and appointed officials here in Manteo.”

The release stated that the Board of Commissioners thanked Ayers for his “hard work and dedicated service to the Town of Manteo.”

“The Board will consider its options in filling this key position, and an announcement will be provided at a future date,” stated the release.

Ayers has served in the role since early 2019, when he succeeded Kermit Skinner, who retired at the end of 2018 after 28 years. Before his work with the Town of Manteo, Ayers served as general services director for the City of Asheville, assistant town manager and director of engineering and public works for the Town of Bluffton, SC and in real estate development and construction management.
