A facility improvement project at Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Frisco Beach Access began Wednesday, Sept. 15. The popular beach access is located just south of Frisco.

The $896,506 project, awarded to T.D. McGhee Co. from Wilmington will include the following improvements at Frisco Beach Access:

• The existing 44-space parking area will be expanded by 36 spaces. These additional spaces replace the parking area that was lost due to Hurricane Florence at the old Frisco Pier site.
• The parking area will receive a new asphalt overlay. A short closure of the parking area during the asphalt phase of the contract will be necessary. Public notifications will be made in advance of parking area closure.
• Renovations will be made to the restroom facility, including new toilets, urinals, sinks and lighting.
• Exterior decking and shower area flooring will be replaced with precast concrete panels.
• The restroom facility will receive new siding.
• Outdoor showers will be replaced.

“This project will improve visitor access and experience at one of Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s most popular beach areas,” said David Hallac, superintendent, National Parks of Eastern North Carolina. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, Frisco Beach Access offers daily lifeguard services.

During the 120-day project, expected to be completed by mid-January 2022, portable restrooms, temporary showers and access to the boardwalk will be available to the public. Twenty-five parking spaces at the south end of the parking area will be made available for public use, except during the paving phase of the project.
