First Flight girls win regional meet, boys close second

On Saturday, January 16, First Flight freshman runner Lucy Stecher led the Nighthawks to a first place finish in a NCHSAA 2A East Regional Cross Country meet at Newport.

Stecher’s 20:02.53 earned her a second place finish behind Croatan’s junior Navaya Zales, who won with a time of 19:38.16. With five runners among the top ten finishers, First Flight scored 24 points to easily defeat Croatan in second place with 55 points. Hailee Reinke was the lone Currituck County runner in tenth place. The time for Stecher was also the 84th fastest among all times in the state.

The boys race saw First Flight finish with 32 points for a close second behind Croatan’s 29 points. Currituck County boys were ninth with 185 points.

Both First Flight teams qualified for the State Finals in Kernersville on Friday, January 22.

In 1A competition at Northside High School in Pinetown, Cape Hatteras boys placed fifth with 118 points. Manteo and Cape Hatteras did not field scoring teams.
