Pocosin Lakes Refuge has a year-round black bear population. And while the bears do slow down in the colder winter weather, in this region they don’t actually hibernate, according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

“So on just about any day there’s a possibility that you might see a bear or two out crossing the road, or in a field or canal,” says USFWS.

Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is one of nine national wildlife refuges in the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Complex.
