Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

By Mike Caton

John 8:12, When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

When we think about light, what source do we think about? Right now, there is an overhead light on, while I am writing this. In an hour or so, the sun will rise, and that will give us light for about half the day. When we come home this evening, we will turn on lamps in the living room, lights in the kitchen and dining room. I have a little night light in my bathroom, just so I can see when I go in there before I go to bed. The truth is, we all need and we like light.

Jesus said he was the light of the world. When we follow him, we will never have to walk in the dark. The dark represents that which is evil, unknown, unseen, dangerous, scary and so forth. No one wants to live their life completely in the dark. Just as the sun in the sky provides warmth, hope and helps our bodies function, prompting the production and use of certain vitamins and minerals, so does the Son of God provide us with the hope and strength we need for this life. That light shines to illuminate the truth, it shows us the paths we need to take. And that light, Jesus, leads us to and actually is, the light of life.

The question for us then is, do we accept the light and follow it? We get to choose the ways we want to go, the directions we want to follow. We truly need to follow the son!

Father, help me always stay in your light. In Jesus’ name, amen.
