December 7, 1928 – December 1, 2020

Edward “Bunk” Wilson Carawan, 91, of Swan Quarter, died Tuesday, December 1, 2020, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Bunk was born in Beaufort County on December 7, 1928, to the late Emmett E. and Katie Cox Carawan. He was a member of the Swan Quarter Christian Church. He was also a Mason, a member of the Eastern Star, and a retired volunteer fireman.

He served his country during the Korean War with the United States Army. Upon his discharge from military service, he worked for the Newport News shipyard, worked as a guide for the Mattamuskeet Lake, was a deputy sheriff for Hyde County Sheriff’s Department, was the District Supervisor for Hyde County within the North Carolina Department of Transportation, and in retirement, a bridge attendant for the Fairfield Drawbridge.

To describe Bunk is hard but he can best be described as a “character.” Full of life, he loved his family, church, and community. He worked hard to provide but enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing, telling stories, cooking and working in his garden. He made the best barbeque sauce and had “family dinners” every Sunday that he cooked, where he wouldn’t just pass the biscuits, he would toss them across the table. He taught his grandkids how to slide down the stair banister at his house and he always won the race home from church. He was a great Dad and Grandad and will be missed by many.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 3, 2020, at the Swan Quarter Christian Church. Pastor Phil Emmert and Raffael Farrow, will officiate. Burial will follow in the family plot in Soule Cemetery

Surviving are two daughters, Luana C. Gibbs and husband C.R. of Engelhard and Leigh Ann Carawan and special friend Tony Edmondson of Middlesex; a granddaughter, Cameron G. Roberts and husband Jared of Fairfield, and one sister, Metta C. Austin of Manteo. Lenora “Nonie” Bright is a surviving special friend, whom he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by a grandson Ryan Edward Gibbs; two brothers Wilbur G. “Bill” Carawan, Myron Glenn Carawan, and one sister Jane C. Barber.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, December 2, 200 at Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter.

In observance of the CDC guidelines, face covering is suggested to everyone attending the services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Swan Quarter Christian Church, c/o Lenora Bright, Treasurer, 141 Second Street, Swan Quarter NC 27885.
