North Carolina deputy shot in leg while responding to domestic call

A deputy was shot in the leg Thursday night when a woman took a gun from her husband and it went off, a North Carolina sheriff’s office said.

Lt. Kevin Suthard, spokesman for the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, said in a news release Friday that two deputies went to a Reidsville home for a domestic disturbance call.

Suthard said Angel Galvin Silva, 44, came out of a room with a handgun in his waistband. When his wife grabbed the gun and tried to disarm him, the gun went off and hit a deputy in the lower leg, the lieutenant said. The deputy who wasn’t struck took Silva’s gun and took him into custody.

The sheriff’s office said Deputy Tyler Wiseman was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a serious but non-life-threatening injury.

Silva was charged with assault by pointing a firearm in connection with an earlier incident at the home. He’s jailed on a $1,000 secured bond and it wasn’t known if he has an attorney.

Charges for the shooting aren’t expected, Suthard said, after an investigation found the shooting wasn’t intentional.

Sheriff Sam Page asked the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation to assist in the case.
