The Hatteras Island Food Pantry received a $3,000 check from Conner’s Supermarket and Outer Beaches Realty, partners in an annual Gobble Gobble event.
In past events, 10 names were drawn from among those entered in a raffle. A reverse raffle proceeded with one person remaining. That person shopped for a 2.5 minutes, plus some bonus time if three questions were correctly answered. Last year’s family collected food from Conner’s shelves totaling $836.95, which both Conner’s and Outer Beaches Realty matched. The winners gave most of the groceries to the food pantry.
The coronavirus pandemic has changed a lot of events this year.
As stated on the Outer Beaches Facebook page, “As with many things this year, we changed how we do things but not what we do…”
The $3,000 donation, made Nov. 19, fits with the annual island-wide food drive to stock the food pantry. The food drive runs through Dec. 31, 2020. Outer Beaches Realty’s offices in Hatteras, Avon and Waves, which are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., are collection locations.
Non-perishable food items should be unopened and not past their “use by” dates.
The following are this year’s collection points, in addition to Outer Beaches Realty, where food donations can be dropped off:
– Frisco Market/Rod and Gun in Frisco, daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
– Our Lady of the Seas Catholic Parish Social Hall in Buxton, 24-hr. dropbox on porch of social hall, not the church.
The following collection points are all open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.:
– Surf-or-Sound Realty in Avon
– Midgett Realty in Hatteras, Avon, and Rodanthe
– Sun Realty in Avon and Salvo
– United Bank, formerly Crescom, in Buxton
Monetary donations, which are tax deductible, are also accepted. Online donations can be made at hatterasmethodistmen.org. Checks can be written to United Methodist Men and mailed to P.O. Box 1591, Buxton, NC 27920.
