Boat capsizes in Currituck Sound near Poplar Branch Boating Access

A boat has capsized early Wednesday morning in the Currituck Sound.

At approximately 5:30 a.m., three teens ranging in age from 16-18 departed from the Poplar Branch Boating Access Area to duck hunt the Currituck Sound. Not from the immediate area, the three boys were in a 14’ foot aluminum jon boat and ill-prepared for the strong winds and rough waters, according to North Carolina Wildlife Resources Sergeant John Beardsley.

“Once they were underway and approximately a half mile from the boat ramp, they decided it was too rough and attempted to return to shore,” stated Beardsley. “Their boat began taking water over the stern (back) and capsized, turning over and spilling the boys and their gear into the water.”

No one was wearing a lifejacket and the boys clung to the boat for safety. One of them contacted Currituck 911 from his cell phone.

Currituck Fire Station 5 responded with their skiff and was able to rescue the boys from the water, stated Beardsley. Currituck County EMS was on scene and provided treatment. Currituck County Sherriff’s Office deputies and NC Wildlife responded as well.

NC Wildlife is conducting an investigation into the cause of the incident.

“We would like to remind hunters and all boaters to check the weather and plan accordingly before leaving the boat ramp,” stated Beardsley. “Adding decoys and other hunting gear effects the performance of your vessel and as always WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKET!”
