As of Monday morning, NC 12 is closed between the Marc Basnight Bridge over Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe. NC 12 on Ocracoke Island between the pony pens and the ferry terminal is also closed.

NCDOT reports that Sunday night’s high tide was the “most severe of the event so far, with water and deep sand on several portions of roadway. Our crews are currently starting clearing operations, but the next two high tide cycles are forecast to produce similar results.”

NCDOT expects these portions of NC 12 to remain closed until Tuesday afternoon, September 22.

Ferry operations at Hatteras Inlet are suspended until further notice due to the closure of NC 12 on Ocracoke Island. For further information on ferry operations, call 252-996-6000.Top of Form

Cape Hatteras National Seashore has reported that approximately 80 yards of dunes are gone on Ocracoke Island.
