The body of Sundara Baskar Pooraswamy-Chinna was recovered from the Currituck Sound at approximately 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, September 8.
According to Sgt. John Beardsley of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission Law Enforcement Division, Pooraswamy-Chinna was located using a side scan sonar device utilized by the Hertford County and Gates County Emergency Management. Once brought to the surface, he was taken to shore by the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office.
Beardsley said Pooraswamy-Chinna was found in approximately 8 feet of water just inside Dare County near the location that he was last seen. After an initial examination of his body, no foul play is suspected.
Pooraswamy-Chinna went missing after jumping from a pontoon boat to swim Monday just offshore from Duck in the Currituck Sound. He had reportedly struggled in the water and his friends threw him a life jacket. Unable to reach the life jacket, he then fell below the water’s surface. Currituck County took the call at 12:30 p.m.
Pooraswamy-Chinna was reported to be from India working for an IT company in New Jersey.
Agencies assisting in the search include Currituck County Sheriff’s Office, Hertford County Emergency Management, Gates County Emergency Management, NC Marine Patrol, Crawford Township Fire Station and NC Wildlife.
