At Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station, the 2020 historic reenactors haul the Breeches Buoy apparatus cart from the 1874 station house to the drill grounds.
On Thursday, July 30, keeper Larry Grubbs aimed true and the Lyle gun fired its projectile through the arms of the wreck pole in the initial step toward rescuing eight year-old Julian Evans-Chrisman from the “wreck.” The drill team dedicated the performance to 19 men who lost their lives when the Strathairly wrecked in 1891 and the surfmen who saved seven men.
The Breeches Buoy drill is performed every Thursday at 2 p.m. through Labor Day at the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station, 23645 NC 12, Rodanthe.
