Sky diver: The osprey

Especially when they are over water, osprey (Pandion haliaetus) are great birds to observe. They catch fish by swooping down along the surface of the water and grabbing fish with their talons or by diving into the water, often from dozens of feet above.

Catching fish requires great eyesight and timing. They have a nearly 70% catch rate. Nationally known by several names – river hawk, fish hawk and sea hawk – they’re the only raptor in North America whose diet consists nearly totally of live fish.
