Shirley Lutz has been waiting for 20 years for her century plant to bloom.
Located on S. Pamlico Way in Nags Head Cove, Lutz’s century plant will only bloom once in its lifetime. The longevity of this type of plant, a member of the asparagus family, is around 25 years.
Once used for medicines, fiber, needles and food, this was an important plant for indigenous people.
The plant has grown almost overnight, according to Lutz, and now sits about 20-ft. off the ground. Lutz invites anyone who wants to come see her “once in a lifetime” blooming plant to drive by her garden.
