The Manteo Planning Board approved the use of a temporary tent at a local business to accommodate customers during the COVID-19 health crisis. The request to erect a 20 by 20 foot tent in the front yard of the Olde Towne Creamery on Highway 64 was approved after the town planner said the structure would meet code and permitted as a temporary structure under the town ordinance.

The approval was unanimous and carried a stipulation that the tent is a temporary solution and would be removed after 180 days or fourteen days after the health crisis ends. Board member Jamie Daniels said it is going to look terrible, but recognized that everyone was trying to “figure it out” looking for ways to help businesses cope with the challenges they currently face.

In other business, the Planning Board approved a planned addition to the Dare County Social Services building located in the town. The addition will be built over an existing open courtyard and bridge a gap between two existing buildings. The planning board also set a public hearing on a Board of Commissioners request for a recommendation to allow boat lifts at marinas in Manteo.
