The Dare County Transportation System that provides affordable weekday service for on-demand transportation for Dare County residents is operating with limitations during the ongoing coronavirus situation. The van service has been forced to curb what has been termed non-essential trips.
Sharon Flatt, transportation program supervisor, explained that users of the system will be restricted to what are considered essential trips. Approved transportation includes doctor verified essential office visits, food shopping, work transportation and some other approved activities.
Many of the Dare County Transportation staff are in the identified COVID-19 high risk groups, according to Flat, who said in light of the current pandemic, Dare County Transportation drivers can refuse to allow passengers with a cough or other symptoms to board the van.
Prospective passengers must pre-register, call in advance and different rules apply to different groups. Flatt cautioned that the current situation is an evolving health crisis and transportation availability and criteria could change with little notice.
After being signed up for service, trips may be scheduled by calling reservations at 252-475-5640 or 252-475-5765.
