Wanchese – Mr. Carlton Gene Barkley or “Corkey” as he was best known, died on March 3, 2020 as he wished – at his home, in his favorite recliner, with his wife Millie by his side.
Born March 20, 1946 Corkey was just shy of his 74th birthday. He was born in Elizabeth City, the son of the late Calvin and Effie Barkley. Corky was also predeceased by brother C.B. Barkley and father-in-law Bill Gallop.
Corkye was dearly loved and worked hard for his family. He greatly enjoyed fishing, crabbing and shrimping in local waters and loved attending his grandchildren’s many sporting events.
Corkey is survived by Mildred “Millie” Gallop Barkley his wife of 41 years; daughters Tanya Barkley-Graham, Veelee Donahue (Bill) and Dana Tillett (Kydd); grandchildren Forest (Esther), York, Thatcher, Corbin, and CeeCee; sister Sylvia Williams (Webb); brother Jimmy Barkley (Delana); mother-in-law Lois Gallop; two God-children, as well as many special nieces and nephews, and too many caring friends to mention.
The family is honoring Corkey’s plans for cremation. The memorial service will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church of Wanchese March 15 at 2 p.m. Rev. Ken Mann will officiate. Friends may call on the family at all times until the service at the Barkley/Gallop residences.
