Restroom facilities being installed at Prospect Ave. beach access in KDH

The Prospect Avenue beach access in Kill Devil Hills is temporarily closed. Permanent restroom facilities are being installed under the direction of the Kill Devil Hills Board of Commissioners.
At the Jan. 14 commissioners meeting, town staff was asked to survey potential beach accesses for the installation of public restrooms. After several recommendations from staff were given to the board, Prospect Ave. was found to be the ideal location for restroom facilities.
Regulatory factors were taken into account, along with “basic logistics such as design, parking, construction and funding.”
“Prospect Avenue’s beach access is able to accommodate permanent bathroom facilities with little to no change to its walkway and parking configuration. The beach access at Prospect Avenue is currently handicap accessible to the dune top and has 28 parking spaces,” stated a press release.
Funding for this project was allocated from the town’s Shoreline Access Capital Reserve Fund for $50,000. The Shoreline Access Plan was updated to reflect existing beach accesses and their features to identify which are available for further improvements.
This project is set to be completed and re-opened to the public in April 2020. Kill Devil Hills will continue to research options and funding for future beach access improvements. For more information, visit the town’s website at www.kdhnc.com.
