GEM program hosts English tea party

Every Friday afternoon, those dealing with Alzheimer’s are given the chance to come together and partake in crafts, games and music. Through GEM’s Meaningful Days program, led by Gail Sonnesso, caregivers are able to take a break from their everyday role while participants are engaged in the program’s uniquely designed activities.
On Dec. 21, the GEM team hosted a tea party for the participants and their families and friends. Susan Darling, GEM board member, provided authentic stollen, tea and traditional English chocolates for everyone to enjoy.
Before the tea party, Elaine Reed and Angelo Sonnesso led the group in song as they sang Christmas carols such as “O Holy Night” and “O Come Let Us Adore Him.” The participants also worked on a craft together, making greeting cards for their loved ones. “This gives everyone choices; no matter what they choose, it turns out perfect,” Gail said.
Once everyone sat down for tea, Darling and the other volunteers passed around delicate tea cups, courtesy of Peggy Bryson, filled with hot fruit tea, and desserts to the group. Everyone introduced themselves and said where they were from.
“Frank, he’s one of our participants that comes every week,” Darling said. “He always gets excited because he knows on Friday that he’s ‘going to the party’ and seeing everyone.” Darling added that it’s great to see how much fun the participants have while they attend Meaningful Days.
Several College of The Albemarle students came to make crafts, sing carols and drink tea with the participants as well, including Monalisa MacArolia, Lindsay Brothers and Shanese Jackson. GEM intern Ana Fiegel helped to led the songs and get everyone involved.
“We appreciate all the work and support of our GEM team to really engage our participants and celebrate the season together,” Gail Sonnesso said afterward. To learn more about the GEM program and how to get involved, contact Sonnesso at 252-480-3354 or email her at gsonnesso@gmail.com.
