Portion of NC 12 on Hatteras Island to remain closed overnight
Published 5:02 pm Sunday, November 17, 2019
NC 12 will remain closed through at least the remainder of Sunday, November 17 from the Marc Basnight Bridge (Oregon Inlet) to Rodanthe. State transportation officials will reassess road conditions Monday and begin clearing and any possible repair work required to reopen the road.
Limited visibility, severe ocean overwash and wind-blown sand prompted the NCDOT to close the road between Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe at 5 p.m. Saturday and keep it closed until at least Monday.
NCDOT crews have been working to clear sand that was blown onto NC 12 during this weekend’s coastal storm. Weather conditions could send more ocean overwash onto the road during upcoming high tide cycles. The storm is forecast to exit the coast later Sunday or Monday.

On Sunday afternoon, Dare County Public Works announced that the inclement weather and dangerous road conditions will prohibit residential and commercial sanitation collection from taking place on Monday for Hatteras Island customers.
If conditions allow, collection will resume on Tuesday, November 19 with the following changes to the schedule:
Residential: Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras on Tuesday; Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon on Wednesday and regular schedule on Thursday and Friday.
Commercial: Tuesday and Friday.
