Cape Hatteras volleyball team takes first state round

On Saturday, Oct. 26, Cape Hatteras Secondary’s varsity volleyball team defeated Rosewood 3-1 in the first round of state playoffs.

For the second round, the Cape Hatteras team was scheduled to take on Camden County on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at First Flight High School at 5:30 p.m.

Rosewood from Goldsboro captured the first set 27-25. Rosewood took an early lead, but a rally by Rubie Shoemaker pushed Cape Hatteras ahead 11-10. The Lady Hurricanes maintained the lead until Eagles Allecia Langdon and Alyssa Smothers combined scoring to tie the set at 21.

Back and forth the lead went. Cape Hatteras tied at 22, 23, 24 and 25. Eagle Laine Marak, a defensive standout for the Eagles, served the winning points.

Cape Hatteras triumphed in the next three sets.

In the second outing, the score was tied six times before Cape Hatteras pulled away at 13-10. In the second serving round, Yoselyn Gabriel served up four points including an ace to give Cape Hatteras a commanding lead. Cape Hatteras posted a 25-18 win.

In a hotly contested third faceoff, Cape Hatteras trailed initially. Then Evan Augustson stepped to the serving line. She reeled off a seven-point rally putting the Lady Hurricanes ahead 17 to 11.

For the Eagles, Smothers responded and served four points, just one point shy of a tie.

Rosewood kept pushing and tied the game at 21. For Cape Hatteras, Shoemaker posted the 24th point. Rosewood tied. Cape Hatteras gained 25 with side out. Rosewood the same. Augustson served an ace to win the set 27-25.

Again, early on in the final, Cape Hatteras trailed Rosewood. Cape Hatteras tied at 6, at 10, at 12 and pushed ahead but Rosewood tied at 18. With the crowd yelling “let’s go Hatteras,” Laura Hooper served points 24 and 25 to take the match and the first round in the state tournament.

The game was played at Cape Hatteras Elementary School. The Cape Hatteras team extended a welcome to Rosewood by providing all visiting team members with goody bags.

North Carolina High School Athletic Association Volleyball Playoffs

Cape Hatteras defeated Rosewood 3-1.

Camden won 3-0 against North Duplin.

Manteo lost to Pamlico 3-0.

First Flight lost to South Columbus 3-1.

Currituck defeated Durham School of the Arts 3-0.

Currituck hosts North Carolina School of Science and Math for the second round match in the state playoffs. The match was scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
