The Cotton Gin’s Jarvisburg location ravaged by Saturday fire

The Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg was destroyed by a fire that began early Saturday afternoon, October 12.

The Lower Currituck Volunteer Fire Department and Crawford Township Fire Department were dispatched to a structure fire at 6957 Caratoke Highway at approximately 1:41 p.m. Initial units arrived at The Cotton Gin at 1:48 p.m. and reported flames from the roof and declared a working fire, according to a press release from Lower Currituck VFD Deputy Chief Hayden Poulin.

Command was established and multiple automatic and mutual aid fire departments were requested, including crews from Kitty Hawk, Southern Shores and Duck. A Tanker Task Force was also requested to supplement water supply from multiple county hydrants.

The bulk of the fire had been knocked down by around 8 p.m. Saturday. Some minor flames and smoke were still visible early Sunday afternoon in the southern section of the remains of the structure.

No injuries have been reported and the cause is under investigation.
