A Virginia man was seriously injured when he was struck by a tractor trailer as he crossed the US 158 Highway in the early hours of Thursday, October 3.

Police say Brent C. Harris, 39, of Richmond, Va. was walking east across US 158 just north of the Ocean Acres intersection in Kill Devil Hills when he was struck. Kill Devil Hills Police, Fire and Dare County EMS responded at around 1:18 a.m.

The Kill Devil Hills Police Department released a statement revealing that evidence and witness statements indicate a 2017 Mack 600 tractor trailer truck driven by Dalton Johnson, 28, of Dunn, was travelling northbound on US 158 at or near the posted speed of 45 mph. Two traffic lights in the area were green for the tractor trailer truck as the pedestrian crossed the roadway approximately 60 feet north of the crosswalk at Ocean Acres Drive.

The investigation indicates Johnson attempted to avoid striking Harris, but the truck collided with the pedestrian in the outside northbound travel lane. Harris sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported by Dare MedFlight to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Virginia. His condition is not known as of mid-day Thursday.

The collision caused the intersection of US 158 and Ocean Acres to be closed for approximately two hours. The investigation determined that the driver of the truck, Johnson, was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. Johnson was not charged with any violations.
