Wendy Sisler of Hatteras Island is the Dare County recipient of the North Carolina Medallion Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service for 2019. The First Lady of the state of North Carolina, Kristin Cooper, presented the award at a reception in Raleigh in May.

Sisler was honored for her assistance in bringing PORT Health Services to Hatteras Island. Once a site was chosen for the clinic, Sisler helped with all aspects of the project from raising $30,000 in donations to finding volunteers to assist with building renovations to helping with interior design including securing donations of local art and making sure those working on the building had the materials needed to do the job. Through her efforts she attacked the stigma attached to substance use disorders by engaging an entire community in the process of bringing the clinic into being.

The Medallion Award is presented yearly to the top 20-25 volunteers in North Carolina.
