Plans for a new, larger Dollar General Store in Columbia have been submitted for the town’s approval, Rhett White, town manager, told the board of aldermen June 3.

The proposed site is on the north side of U.S. Hwy 64 East between Duck Thru Fueling Station and Hwy 55 Burgers Shakes & Fries.

The new building is to be 10,640 square feet, compared with the existing store, which is 8,000 square feet.

Site plans submitted by Triangle Site Design, a Raleigh civil engineering firm, calls for 38 parking spaces on the two-acre site with a single driveway entrance from the highway. The current Dollar Store property is 0.63 acres.

White expects reports from the fire department and building inspector when the planning board reviews the concept, probably on July 11.

“The store layout will be different and more accommodating,” White commented.

A development group in Raleigh will own the property, build the structure and lease it to Dollar General, a familiar arrangement for several Columbia businesses, White said.
