They are going home! Six sea turtles that were treated and rehabilitated at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island will be released on Saturday, May 4 in Hatteras Island.
The four loggerhead sea turtles and two green sea turtles were treated at the Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation (STAR) Center and were recently cleared for release by NCARI’s veterinary team. Of these turtles, five recovered from being cold-stunned this past winter and the sixth is healthy again after healing from an entanglement.
The release will take place at 11 a.m. at the Frisco Bath House, 56310 NC-12, just south of Frisco. This event is open to the public and is weather dependent. Attendees are asked to obey parking signs. If the lot is full, parking on the shoulder of NC-12 (completely off the highway) is permitted.
NCARI expressed thanks to partners at Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Network for Endangered Sea Turtles (N.E.S.T.) for making this possible.
In case of a weather cancellation, an update will be posted to the aquarium’s Facebook page and other social media sites.
